How Your Nervous System Affects Fertility (And What to Do About It)

By Maria Santee7/10/2025
How Your Nervous System Affects Fertility (And What to Do About It)

If you’ve been trying to conceive and feel like you're doing "everything right" , eating clean, tracking your cycle, taking supplements, but still aren’t getting pregnant, you’re not alone. One of the most overlooked root causes of fertility struggles is **chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation.

In functional medicine, we know that fertility isn’t just about hormones, it’s about safety. Your nervous system plays a profound role in whether your body feels safe enough to support conception.

Stress and Fertility: Why Your Body Puts Reproduction on Pause

When you're under chronic stress — emotional, physical, or hidden — your body prioritizes survival over reproduction. That means the brain signals your adrenals to pump out cortisol and adrenaline, not estrogen or progesterone.

Over time, this can lead to:

* Irregular or absent ovulation

* Short luteal phases and low progesterone

* Elevated cortisol and low DHEA

* Inflammation and gut disruption

* Increased risk of miscarriage or implantation failure

Your body is wise. If it doesn't feel safe, it will **pause fertility to protect you**.

The Vagus Nerve: Your Fertility Superhighway

The vagus nerve is the main connector between your brain and body — especially your gut, uterus, ovaries, and heart. It’s the communication line between your nervous system and your fertility.

When your vagus nerve is underactive (which is common with stress, trauma, or inflammation), you may experience:

* Poor digestion and nutrient absorption

* Hormone imbalances

* Mood swings or anxiety

* Increased inflammation

* Trouble conceiving

**Activating your vagus nerve** and shifting into the parasympathetic “rest and receive” state is essential for healthy ovulation, implantation, and egg quality.

 Fertility, Safety, and the Wisdom of the Body — TEDx Talk

To truly understand the connection between safety and fertility, I highly recommend watching this TEDx talk by my mentor and colleague, Dr. Aumatma: Fertility Secrets: Understanding Your Body's Wisdom,  at TEDxTAMU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVv-O-SDXe0

She beautifully explains how a woman's body will only prioritize fertility when the nervous system feels safe. It’s a message every fertility seeker should hear.

'When our body detects safety, it promotes health, growth, and restoration.” – Dr. Aumatma

This aligns perfectly with the work we do at, Vital Fertility. helping your body remember how to feel safe, nourished, and ready to receive.

 Nervous System Reset: What You Can Do

The good news is, you CAN reset your nervous system. These are the top practices I recommend to clients inside our fertility programs and in-clinic services:

 1. FlowPresso Lymphatic Massage Therapy

This gentle compression therapy calms the vagus nerve, promotes detox, and supports emotional release. Many patients leave sessions saying they feel like they've had 10 hours of restorative rest in just 40 minutes.

2. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Laser therapy over the abdomen supports mitochondrial energy in the ovaries, improves blood flow, and reduces inflammation — all while stimulating vagal tone. It’s deeply calming and fertility-enhancing.

3. Daily Nervous System Rituals

  • Small daily actions retrain your nervous system to feel safe.
  • Vagus nerve breathing or humming
  • Warm herbal teas (tulsi, lemon balm, chamomile)
  • Castor oil packs over your uterus or liver
  • Gentle somatic movement or tapping

4. Targeted Nutraceutical Support

Adaptogens like Ashwagandha, magnesium glycinate, B-complex vitamins, and calming amino acids can help regulate cortisol and rebuild stress resilience, especially when tailored to your lab data.

You Can’t Heal Fertility in a State of Fight-or-Flight

If your body has been stuck in survival mode, it's not your fault, it’s doing what it’s designed to do. But with the right support, you can guide your body back into safety and fertility.

At Vital Fertility, we weave together nervous system care, root-cause diagnostics, and in-clinic therapies like FlowPresso and LLLT to help women reclaim their fertility from the inside out.

Ready to Reset and Receive?

You don’t have to “push through” anymore. Let’s co-create a fertility plan that restores nervous system balance and welcomes the pregnancy you’re ready for.
