Summer Reading & Listening for Fertility and Hormone Health

By Maria Santee5/25/2026
Summer Reading & Listening for Fertility and Hormone Health

Summer can be a powerful time to slow down, reconnect with your body, and learn more about the biology that shapes your fertility and hormones.

One of the things I often remind my patients is this: Understanding your body changes the way you make decisions about your health.

Whether you’re trying to conceive, navigating IVF, recovering from hormonal birth control, or moving through perimenopause, education matters. Not because information alone “fixes” things, but because clarity creates empowerment.

Below are some of the books and podcasts I frequently recommend to women who want a deeper understanding of fertility, hormones, metabolism, and reproductive health. Happy Reading & listening!

Books for Fertility & Reproductive Health

It Starts With the Egg by Rebecca Fett

One of the most well-known books in the fertility space focused on egg quality, environmental exposures, and evidence-informed lifestyle support for conception and IVF preparation.

Especially helpful for:

  • IVF preparation
  • egg quality support
  • recurrent pregnancy loss
  • advanced maternal age fertility support

Real Food for Fertility by Lily Nichols & Lisa Hendrickson-Jack

A foundational book on preconception nutrition and fertility physiology. I often recommend this to women who want to understand how nutrition influences hormone production, ovulation, metabolic health, and pregnancy outcomes.

Especially helpful for:

  • preconception planning
  • blood sugar balance
  • PCOS
  • nutrient optimization
  • pregnancy preparation

Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler

A classic and foundational resource for understanding ovulation, cervical mucus, cycle tracking, and fertility awareness.

Especially helpful for:

  • understanding menstrual cycles
  • learning fertility awareness
  • identifying ovulation patterns
  • reconnecting with body literacy

Beyond the Pill by Dr. Jolene Brighten

A valuable introduction to post-birth-control hormone recovery and foundational hormone support.

Especially helpful for:

  • post-pill symptoms
  • irregular cycles
  • acne
  • hormone disruption
  • fertility preparation after hormonal contraception
  • Books for Perimenopause & Hormone Health

The New Menopause  by Dr. Mary Claire Haver

A highly accessible overview of menopause physiology, symptoms, hormone therapy, metabolic changes, and aging.

Especially helpful for:

  • understanding hormonal transitions
  • menopause symptom education
  • metabolic health
  • HRT discussions

The New Perimenopause by Dr. Mary Claire Haver

Focused specifically on the earlier hormonal transition years that many women are navigating without realizing it.

Especially helpful for:

  • mood changes
  • sleep disruption
  • cycle changes
  • fatigue
  • understanding early hormone shifts

Estrogen Matters by Avrum Bluming, MD & Carol Tavris, PhD

A thought-provoking book examining the history and science surrounding hormone replacement therapy and women’s health.

Especially helpful for:

  • women researching HRT
  • understanding WHI controversy
  • informed menopause conversations

How to Menopause by Tamsen Fadal (creator of the M Factor Movie)

A patient-friendly and approachable resource that blends education with real-world experiences around menopause and midlife health.

Especially helpful for:

  • women early in the menopause journey
  • symptom normalization
  • feeling less alone in the transition
  • Podcasts for Fertility, Hormones & Women’s Health

  • Everyday Wellness Podcast — Cynthia Thurlow https://www.cynthiathurlow.com/podcast

Focused on metabolic health, insulin resistance, perimenopause, nutrition, and longevity through a women’s health lens.

  • On Health for Women — Aviva Romm, MD https://avivaromm.com/category/podcast/

Conversations on women’s health, hormones, fertility, pregnancy, and the deeper root causes influencing long-term wellness.

Why  am I sharing these resources with you...Many women spend years being told:

“everything looks normal”, “this is just aging”, “your labs are fine”, or “keep trying”

But hormone health is deeply connected to:

  • metabolism
  • inflammation
  • thyroid physiology
  • nutrient status
  • nervous system regulation
  • sleep
  • gut health
  • and hormone signaling

The goal is understanding your biology well enough to make more informed, empowered decisions about your next steps.

Whether you’re navigating fertility challenges or hormone shifts in perimenopause, education can become a powerful starting point.

And sometimes, the right book or conversation helps women realize: their symptoms are not random, and their bodies are worth understanding.
