Your Menstrual Cycle Is Your Fifth Vital Sign

In conventional/allopathic medicine, vital signs help us understand how well the body is functioning at a basic, foundational level.

Heart rate.

Blood pressure.

Respiration.

Temperature.

In women’s health, there is a fifth: the menstrual cycle.

Your cycle is not an isolated reproductive event. It’s a real-time report card of how your nervous system, endocrine system, metabolism, and nutrient status are working together.

Ovulation, in particular, is an energetically expensive process.

Your body will only support it when it feels safe, nourished, and well-regulated.

When it doesn’t, symptoms often appear:

- Irregular or changing cycles
- PMS that worsens over time
- Heavier or lighter bleeding
- New anxiety, fatigue, or sleep disruption
Subtle shifts that are easy to dismiss, but hard to ignore. These changes are often the first signals, not the final problem.

Why Fertility Is About More Than Babies

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that, fertility only matters if you’re actively trying to conceive.

In reality, fertility reflects biological capacity and vitality.

It tells us:

- Whether your brain is effectively signaling your ovaries
- Whether blood sugar and stress hormones are stable enough to support hormone production
- Whether nutrient reserves are sufficient
- Whether inflammation and toxic load are manageable

Regardless if you've become a mother, your body doesn’t abruptly shift from fertile to not fertile.

There is a slow transition (starting in your mid 30s to early 40s) and it leaves clues.

The Overlap Between Fertility and Perimenopause:

Fertility and perimenopause share the same hormonal players:

- Estrogen and progesterone
- The hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis
- Cortisol and blood sugar regulation
- Thyroid function
- Gut and liver detoxification pathways

Here's the key...What changes isn’t the system, it’s the resilience of the system.

As demands increase (stress, nutrient depletion, inflammation, toxin exposure), the body may start to conserve energy. Ovulation becomes less consistent. Progesterone production declines. Estrogen signaling becomes more erratic.

This can show up as:

- Shorter or longer cycles
- New PMS or anxiety
- Sleep disturbances
- Weight changes despite “doing everything right”

These are not failures. They are feedback.

Why “Feeling Off” Is Important Information

Many women are told to wait until symptoms are severe, cycles stop, or labs are clearly abnormal before taking action.

But biology doesn’t work that way.

By the time something is “diagnosable,” the system has often been compensating for a long time.

Understanding your cycle; its timing, patterns, and symptoms, gives you early insight into where support is needed now, not later.

This is true whether your goal is:

- Optimizing fertility
- Preserving long-term hormonal health
- Navigating perimenopause with more ease
- Or simply feeling like yourself again

This is why I believe fertility is vital, regardless of reproductive goals.

A body that can ovulate regularly is a body that feels resourced, regulated, and resilient.

Supporting fertility is not about forcing outcomes. It’s about restoring communication, safety, and capacity.

When those foundations are addressed, clarity follows, and so do options.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve felt confused about where you are hormonally…

If you’ve been told everything is “normal” but your body says otherwise…

Or if you’re unsure whether your symptoms are fertility-related, perimenopausal, or something else entirely…

Learning how to interpret it, rather than putting a band-aid until it's too much to ignore it, can change how you approach your health moving forward.

Your cycle holds valuable information and how blessed are women that we get this feedback from our bodies each month?!!!
